The causes of blood in your dog’s urine or feces may not be a serious health concern. Your dog is quite small outside and has access to twigs, sharp plastic objects or even garden tools that may have split, causing damage to the lining of the intestinal tract. This type of bleeding will probably only last a day or two. Has your dog eaten an animal or had a wound elsewhere on his body that they may have licked, thus swallowing blood? Even raw skin treats can swell in your dog’s stomach, causing intestinal distress as they pass through the digestive system. Keep in mind that raw skin cannot be absorbed at all.
Blood color can also give you an indication. Have you noticed whether the blood is bright red or dark red, almost black? Bright red blood is usually from the colon or rectum. Blood that darkens is absorbed (higher in the intestinal tract or stomach), leading to discoloration. It is often difficult to tell if there is blood in the urine or faeces, so take a sample of both the faeces and urine and take it to your veterinarian for testing.
Some causes of blood in your dog’s urine or feces may include a minor problem such as an allergy or a more serious health problem such as cancer or stones in the dog’s bladder. The following list shows a wide range of causes for blood in the urine or stool.
–Stress due to constipation
– Food allergies that can lead to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), also called colitis or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
–Parasites
–Polyps that are not cancerous
– Parvovirus
–Bladder cancer and other diseases
– stones in the bladder of dogs
– Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Many times the blood in your dog’s urine can be blamed for stones in the dog’s bladder or a UTI infection. Your veterinarian can perform the correct tests to determine the cause of the blood, the treatment and how to prevent future problems. You can also take the necessary steps to prevent further bladder stones in dogs by using the proper diet that is prescribed along with supplements.
Supplements that help maintain or improve your pet’s immune system can help fight infections and slow future illness. If your dog does not have a strong immune system and is prone to bladder stones and infections, he will not be able to avoid ongoing urinary problems; or other health problems such as cancer.
