The hairless nature of this breed can predispose to exposure to solar radiation and sunburn. Frequent sunburns can cause skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma that look like bad, ulcerated sores that never heal and grow slowly. Squamous cell carcinoma becomes infected and can bleed and cause discomfort. Actinic dermatitis can also develop from chronic ultraviolet rays and changes in the skin that clog hair follicles. Large sinuses that secrete substances that accumulate deeply in the skin can develop.
The Chinese Crested dog breed also suffers from atopic dermatitis. Many of these dogs are affected. Atopic dermatitis tends to appear on hairless parts of the body. In a breed covered with normal hair, atopic dermatitis appears on the feet, groin, armpit or arm pit, abdomen, and the concave or inner surface of the ears. Until recently, the understanding of canine atopic dermatitis was the inhalation of allergens. This basic fact remains true but it is only part of the story. The most recent discovery was the finding that dogs with atopic dermatitis had a defective skin barrier. The skin barrier is deficient in a protein called sphingosine. A lack of sphingosine results in skin leakage. Moisture seeps out of the skin, causing it to dry out. Allergens travel through the skin, causing an immune reaction that appears as an itchy rash.
Therefore, the Chinese hairless crested dog has large parts of the body that are not protected by hair. In Chinese Crested dogs with atopic dermatitis, the itchy rash can envelop almost the entire body.
There are many natural remedies that can really help.
